Abstract

The settlement of the Ostrava area dates back to prehistoric times. Archaeological evidence shows that the discovered sites originated from the Upper Palaeolithic period, specifically the Gravettian culture. Surface findings of lithic artefacts served as the primary indicator of former campsites. These sites, located at an elevation of about 250 m a.s.l., represented both strategically favourable positions and suitable locations for the long - term preservation of the lithic industry in its original context. Unfortunately, some of these layers were later disturbed by anthropogenic activities, particularly by historical and modern mining operations that have significantly reshaped the geological environment of the region. One such example is the Hladový vrch site, where a large part of the settlement remains was destroyed by quarrying. Archaeological research carried out in recent years has provided new insights into the prehistoric occupation of this area and has also resulted in the discovery of an artistic artefact — an engraving depicting animals — further linking the region’s early human activity with its long - standing tradition of raw material utilization.
