To effectively reduce the grouting cost of cement slurry for overlying rock fracture zones and guarantee grouting sealing performance, this study tests the flow characteristic parameters of slurry prepared by ball - milling coal gangue collected from the goaf of Zhujiamao Coal Mine in Shaanxi Province, China, and determines the optimal particle size range of gangue powder suitable for fracture zone grouting. The mechanical properties of consolidated specimens formed by gangue powder - cement composite slurry with different mixing ratios and curing ages are compared and analyzed , and the field application is conducted to verify the sealing performance of this composite grouting material. Results show that finely ground coal gangue generates hydraulic hydration products to offset strength reduction induced by partial cement substitution. Slurries with gangue powder finer than 0.2 mm behave similarly to pure cement slurries with high fluidity and low water separation rate, which can act as aggregates for fracture sealing. As the water - cement ratio rises, slurry fluidity and water separation rate surge, whereas funnel viscosity and density decline. The uniaxial compressive strength of consolidated samples grows with lower gangue powder dosage and longer curing time. In field grouting works for stope overlying rock fractures, gangue powder below 0.2 mm with an 8:1 gangue - to - cement mass ratio and 1.7 water - cement ratio delivers a slurry diffusion distance of 75 m. The formed solidified mass has decent mechanical properties and can reliably seal fracture zones above underground stopes .
