Abstract

The rapid growth of LFP batteries is creating a new and increasingly important source of phosphate demand. At the same time, phosphate remains an essential and non-substitutable resource for fertilizer production, making it critical for global food security. The combination of rising battery demand and a highly concentrated supply chain, dominated by China and Morocco, creates significant supply and geopolitical risks. The results indicate that phosphate should be regarded not only as an agricultural resource but also as a strategic raw material for the energy transition.
