Ventilation Systems in Carpentry Workshops – a Case Study

In cases where gravity ventilation does not provide effective air exchange, a properly designed mechanical ventilation system is the necessary solution. The need to use mechanical ventilation in woodworking plants depends on many aspects, including the possibility of harmful health factors in the carpentry shop, the size of the room and its purpose, the type and frequency of work performed (woodworking - cutting, grinding; furniture assembly), the use and effectiveness of local exhaust systems used and how air dust spreads in the room. The article presents the possibilities of using mechanical ventilation systems to provide employees with occupational health and safety conditions, fire safety, and ongoing cleaning of workstations from shavings, sawdust, and waste generated during woodworking. The basis for the analysis is the dust extraction exhaust system (pneumatic shaving of carpentry machines) of mechanical woodworking rooms, the compensatory supply system, which supplies air to rooms in which local exhaust systems are used, and the supply and exhaust ventilation system of assembly rooms. The article presents design assumptions, the results of the necessary calculations, and the selection of devices included in the mechanical ventilation system of a carpentry workshop.
